The newest medication in dry eye treatment was released recently by the company SHIRE. We had the representative in our office this week to discuss and here is the lowdown:
1.) XIIDRA is similar to longtime dry eye drop Restasis: both reduce inflammation
2.) Inflammation is one of the major causes of chronic dry eye
3.) How does it work? In a nutshell, it prevents inflammatory cells from attaching to your cornea by blocking the receptors that aide in this attachment.
4.) Research: 4 studies were done on those with mild and severe dry eye. The studies show that patients felt better relief with XIIDRA as compared to a placebo
5.) Side effects? Burning upon instillation and a weird taste in your mouth
(I can attest to both as I tested the drop myself. Fortunately they went away the longer I used the drop).
For chronic dry eye sufferers, this drop may be very helpful. We will have to monitor the results in the upcoming months!
