On Thursday, Johnson & Johnson announced that they had teamed up with Transitions Optical to create a contact lens that darkens and lightens depending on the amount of light entering the eye.
This is an interesting advancement that may be a great option for people who play outdoor sports who are unable to wear sunglasses during the game. It also would be a viable option for those who naturally have extreme light sensitivity.
Because the contact lens only covers a small portion of the eye, sunglasses would still need to be worn outside for maximum protection. However, when sunglasses are off, the contact lens provides protection from UV light which affects all structures of the eye including the cornea, lens, and retina.
